MDE Accountability Standards

Important Update

A graduation cap sits atop a stack of books with the text 'MISSISSIPPI RAISING THE BAR' overlaid.

Dear LCS Families,

As part of our commitment to keeping you informed, we want to share some upcoming changes to the state's accountability system. Mississippi has raised the bar for academic achievement. To ensure continuous improvement, state law requires accountability standards to be increased when 65% of schools or districts earn a "B" or higher grade. Mississippi reached that milestone in 2023. As a result, new, higher standards for earning school and district letter grades take effect with the 2025-26 school year.

What This Means for 2025-26 Grades

Because the grading threshold has increased, we want to ensure our community understands how to interpret upcoming state scores:
#1

A New Baseline

Accountability grades will be released in fall 2026 and will set a new baseline for measuring school and district performance.
#2

A Starting Point

Grades for 2025-26 cannot be compared to previous years.
#3

Impact on Letter Grades

As a result of the higher standards to earn each grade, many schools and districts may receive a lower letter grade than they earned in 2024-25, even if their students performed the same or better on state assessments.
#4

Reflecting Standards, Not Quality

This lower grade may be the result of higher standards, not a decline in school or district quality.

Continued Excellence in LCS

While the state's criteria for grading have changed, our dedication to your child’s success remains exactly the same. We are incredibly proud of the tradition of continued excellence in LCS. We are also proud of how hard our teachers work day in and day out to strive towards that tradition of excellence. Under this new model, LCS will continue to challenge, motivate, and empower students to their fullest potential. A shift in a letter grade will not change our mission to provide an outstanding educational experience.

To help provide further context, please take a moment to watch this video provided by State Superintendent of Education Dr. Lance Evans, sharing the basics of what this change means for our state.

In addition, a detailed overview of how the accountability system works, what is included in school and district grades, and how grades are calculated is provided below for your review.
